Parents often do not know how to deal with children`s synaesthesia and how to explain this phenomenon. Hardly a teacher or a school psychologist is skilled with sufficient knowledge about synaesthesia.
Children already have a better access to their perception. Therefore it is really important to support those with synaesthesia in discovering their synaesthesia. This may have a positive influence on the development of the child in different features like learning, creativity and the ability to perceive awarely this planet.
Parents that recognize that a child may be a synaesthete first should ask themselves if they are also synaesthetes, because it is a heredity trait. Then they should look for the dialogue with their children to discover synaesthesia in the different senses we have.
It is also important to explain that synaesthesia is something very normal and that other people do have that, too. The access to the synaesthetic world of perception mostly does not come by itself. Children are open to synaesthesia and when they find a space to experience it, the aware perception of it is promoted.
Ignorance about this issue may lead to a suppression of synaesthesia. A child facing incomprehension or rejection may be frightened and therefore may develop negative attitudes on synaesthesia.

So deal with it in a playful manner and enjoy the exchange with your child.

It was shown that the synaesthetic perception may be a help for memory: for synaesthetes Numbers and letters are not only symbols. They associate them with colors and personalities. Learning processes are supported when new information matches with prior knowledge. The same is essential when meaning is added to information. Synaesthesia alone is not a warrant for better memory capacities. But used in a beneficial way it can be used as a mnemonic technique.
In different studies it was shown that synaesthetes were confused when they are confronted with incongruently colored letters. They performed worse in memorizing them or were slower in calculating with incongruently colored numbers. This effect also can happen in classroom. Teachers should be aware of that.
